What is Walk & Talk?
‘Walk and Talk’ sessions are exactly what it says on the tin – we can conduct our sessions outdoors, immersed in nature with the gentle rhythmic movement of walking to guide us. This is an alternative to the traditional therapeutic context of sitting in office chairs. Walking side by side rather than sitting face to face may feel more comfortable for you when discussing difficult topics. For some people, less direct eye contact may make the conversations feel less intense or confronting. It may also feel helpful to integrate movement, rather than being confined to a chair. However, walking isn’t a must, sitting down somewhere in nature is also an option. In particular, this can be beneficial for those who have experienced trauma, ADHDers, or anyone who feels stuck in the traditional therapeutic environment.
Is it Right for Me?
It is important to consider a few factors when deciding if this is right for you. As we are meeting in a public, outdoor space, we do not have as much control over privacy. There is a possibility that either of us will see someone that we know, or that the conversation may be overheard at some point. For some people, this may make them uncomfortable and may be distracting. For others, this may not concern them. We can manage these risks by setting up plans for what we’ll do if we see someone we know, what you feel comfortable with, and considering the location.
Bookings
Sessions will be held in the mornings and afternoons to avoid the harsh midday sun and are subject to weather conditions. We will stay in touch with you regarding your appointment in the event of inclement weather.
Medicare rebate of $121.65 applies if you have a current mental health care plan. Your rebate amount may be higher if you've reached the Medicare threshold for the year. Please note this rebate is higher than an in office appointment as it is coded by Medicare as ‘out-of-office’.
Location
We are initially offering sessions close to our Gaythorne office, to allow ease of access for the majority of our clients. We are happy to discuss other options if you have a preference, so please email us. Brisbane North has many beautiful locations on offer that may be suitable.
Location: Teralba Park, Everton Park QLD 4053 (Mitchelton side) – meeting next to Scout hut, 120 Pullen Rd. There is onsite public parking at this entrance for your convenience. A coffee cart is often open (Coastal Coffee) if you wish to grab a drink prior to the session.
The park is large and sprawling, with lots of greenery for shade and easy walking tracks. There are accessible toilets within the park.
